A weighting agent is a material that, when added to drilling fluid, increases its density. The most commonly used weighting agents in the drilling industry are barite and hematite, which meet specifications by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Basically, a pH control system measures the pH of the solution and controls the addition of a neutralizing agent (on demand) to maintain the solution at the pH of neutrality, or within certain acceptable limits. It is, in effect, a continuous titration.
Lost circulation is defined as the total or partial loss of drilling fluids or cement to high-permeability zones, cavernous formations and natural or induced fractures during the drilling or completion of a well. Lost circulation controllers form low-permeability bridges across the openings that are accepting fluids.
Corrosion inhibitors are chemicals that, when added in small amounts to a hostile environment, reduce the rate of attack on a material such as a metal. The corrosion inhibitor slows down the rate at which a metal in that environment corrodes.
A cement antifoam can be a liquid that is dosed into the slurry during mixing, or it can be also in solid, powder form that is blended with the dry cement and then disperses inside the mixture as the slurry is created. The typical antifoam dosage is 0.05%–0.1% based on the weight of cement (BOWC).
